The text came in shortly after I returned home from a long Friday at the Punahou Carnival. “Renee and I may be on the KITV 4 news.” Huh? Then this: “Just got home–they showed us on the news.” What? When did this happen?
Punahou’s iconic malasadas are always an item of interest to the news media when covering the annual Punahou Carnival. Such was the case on the Friday, February 3 KITV late newscast.
As luck would have it, the Channel 4 team dropped by the Ewa Malasada tent to film its annual malasada footage. Along the way they interviewed some workers to add some Carnival color to the
coverage. It was there that they hit the jackpot when they found the photogenic and verbally eloquent Babs and Renee for their story.
What a great interview!
Of course, the shout out to “the class of ’74” captured my heart.
And I am sure that Punahou’s Marsha Wright‘s heart melted when Babs declared Punahou’s malasadas”the best on the island.” (Who would disagree?)
But I know that the school’s public relations mavens just bubbled over when Renee explained the true reason for Carnival: financial aid. Her heartfelt personal explanation of how these funds helped her attend Punahou School is gracious and instructive. To see her in the tent, paying it forward by getting her hands doughy, demonstrates personal magnanimity while setting a golden example for others to follow. Way — to — go.
What more can I say. Just this I guess … “Come buy our malasadas!” (Another Renee PR gem. Pithy and to the point.)
Great Job Babs and Renee. You are true daughters of Oahu.
