Thanks to Gaye, the celebration continues.
During this time of 60th birthday celebrations for many classmates Gaye has been using the term “kanreki” to describe the festivities. If you’re like me perhaps you’re wondering what kanreki means. I looked it up:
Kanreki is a celebration held on a man’s 60th birthday. Kan means “return” and reki means “calendar.” At 60, according to the Chinese zodiac, a person has returned to the calendar sign under which the person was born. … the person is beginning his or her life all over again. After February and April’s celebrations, it’s time to continue the beginning of our lives all over again. Here’s the invitation from Gaye:
Let’s get together Punahou Class of ’74 and friends to celebrate the summer 60th Kanreki birthdays, May – August 2016! In lieu of birthday cake, Gaye will bring nostalgic treats: Healthy Pop Tarts from Whole Foods Kahala, Brown Rice Krispie Treats (a.k.a. Kudos) from Trader Joe’s Las Vegas, and Mrs. Marciel’s Caramel Cuts by Gaye!

Outrigger Reef Waikiki Resort. 2169 Kalia Road, Waikiki
Validated parking in front of the hotel for 4 hours. Musical entertainment from 5 p.m. on. You know what they say . . . BE THERE OR BE SQUARE!
Why You Should Be There
These celebrations are a lot of fun. Take April 3 at Wang Chung’s for karaoke.
The occasion was driven by the Sheree, Faye, and Jan who were in town to celebrate their 60th birthdays. They wanted to share some of their time with classmates and several were happy to oblige.
We had a great time “singing to the oldies” not as soloists but as a group … which was many times more fun. Remember We’ve Only Just Begun, Satisfaction, and Maggie May? We ALL did and everyone in the bar knew we did too. There was even one younger guy who left his friends to join us!
Alan was the only guy who came and fit right in with the fun. But we could round out the sound with a few more tenors and baritones the next time. And we all vowed that there would be a next time because it was so so much fun.
Reunion idea? Definitely!
