Congratulations to Punahou varsity soccer team which won the Hawaii state championship last night.
Punahou beat Kapolei 2-0 to win its 19th Division I boys soccer title in the 43rd year of The Queen’s Medical Center/HHSAA Boys Soccer State Championships last evening. The tournament was held at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium.
Among the 700 present cheering the teams on were Punahou74’s Haven Young Rafto and her husband, Stein. For those of you who don’t know, Stein is a regular Punahou74 malasada booth volunteer and was a par-excellence parking lot attendee at our 40th reunion. He is a well-loved hanai member of our class.
In capturing the trophy Punahou overcame three straight seasons of heartbreak: second place finishes in 2013 and 2014; a third place finish in 2015. The win also helped Punahou avoid the longest state-championship drought in school history. The school has never gone five years without claiming a state soccer title.
As the story in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser said, “You can’t keep the Punahou boys down very long.”
Congratulations Punahou. Congratulations Raftos!!
