Punahou goes into this week’s Hawaii High School Athletic Association boys’ state basketball tournament as the #1 seed. Time to cheer the team on … and a Punahou74 child as well.
It was an exciting game last Friday as Punahou opened up a 13-point lead only to have to dodge Iolani’s 3-point attempt at the buzzer. The BuffnBlue escaped with a 48-46 win and took the ILH crown. Phew! The game was such a nail biter that it was all I could do to keep my eyes open to watch it!
Leading the team in many ways was Keith Kam’s son Justin “JB” Kam (#5). Making three 3-point shots, he was the team’s high scorer with 13-points.
Watching a classmate’s son makes the game a little more interesting and, given our ages, these opportunities are becoming rarer with each passing year. I therefore encourage you to consider cheering on the younger Kam, and his teammates, at the tournament this week.
You might even want to spend some time catching up with Keith! I’m sure he will be there reliving the memories of when he was a part of the 1974 Hawaii State Basketball Championship Team that Coach Bud Scott called the “best all-around team we’ve ever had.” Keith scored four points in the championship game when we beat Kailua 73-56. I’m sure he wouldn’t mind seeing his own son get that winning feeling on Saturday night.
The games don’t cost much so it’s great entertainment for a few bucks. Here is the 2015 Basketball Bracket to help you plan.
Oh, and just for a laugh, who do you see in the background of this picture that ran in the newspaper the following day? See, your classmates were there and ready to cheer!
And me? If you can’t guess, the foot with the yellow sandal is mine!
