Please excuse me for using this blog for a moment of personal reflection. I’m sure that there are many other Punahou74 classmates who are celebrating the high school and college graduations of their children this year. I congratulate them all. It’s an accomplishment for both the graduate and for the family. Here’s a toast to future happiness and success … and a good paying job as well!
Traveling to the five college area will be a bit of a homecoming for me as my undergraduate alma mater, Mount Holyoke College, is a mere twenty minute ride away from Amherst College. Unfortunately, it’s not a reunion year or I’d stay at MHC. Fortunately, Amherst is kind enough to offer rooms to parents and families so I’ll bunk there. I will be at Holyoke to purchase plenty of logo wear while experiencing the alumnae parade though!
I’m also looking forward to seeing my college roommate, Nancy. We’ve known each other since the first day I arrived to live in Room 308, Prospect Hall at Mount Holyoke. She’s from Massachusetts and still lives in the area. When she wrote to me before college started she wanted to know if I was a Hawaiian princess! Sorry to disappoint but, like an old married couple, we worked out as a pair. Still friends after all these years.
Amazingly, Nancy’s daughter will be graduating from Amherst alongside my son. With Amherst a males-only school when we entered college, who would have ever envisioned this happy circumstance in 1974? It’ll be another pleasant memory to share with her, her siblings and the family who so kindly hanaied this homesick island girl 38 years ago.
So, dear readers, please accept this apology for a brief hiatus. I will be traveling light: no computer! Keep your news coming though because, as I’ve already said, I’ll be back.
