Received this notice from Punahou that inflation has hit scrip once again. Was entertained by the spin that malasada prices had returned to one scrip. This after the 2005 price increase where malasadas went to fifty cents (two scrip). It was later announced that, that year, the additional twenty-five cents were to support victims of the the Indian Ocean tsunami.
Good news! Carnival scrip will be easier to carry this year. The value of each scrip will increase from 25 cents to 50 cents.
This doesn’t mean all the pricing will change. Many items will cost the same in dollar terms, but require half the number of scrip. For example, one ride coupon will cost 2 scrip instead of 4.
Some items will decrease in price, such as kiddie games, from 3 scrip (75 cents) to 1 scrip (50 cents). A few items will rise in price by 25 cents to accommodate this change.
This adjustment allows us to significantly reduce the amount of paper printed and distributed, supporting our sustainability goals and saving our resources. Hopefully it will be easier for Carnival-goers and cashiers as well.
And malasadas are back to 1 scrip!
