For those of you who voted in the totally unscientific punahou74 “Carnival Food for Thought” poll, you know that malasadas were overwhelmingly voted the #1 favorite Punahou Carnival food. I am in whole hearted agreement with the 77% of you who voted this way.
Now, I know that there are some who prefer what comes from the fryers of Leonard’s, Champion or any number of other local bakeries, but I would have to upold the Punahou malasada as a one-of-a-kind. Its substantial heft, sugary profile, and hint of nutmeg make it a “must buy” Carnival attraction. Best of all, it’s served piping hot; an attribute sorely lacking in its bakery competitors.
Knowing that some of you can’t wait until February for this delectable treat, I found the recipe online. Now you can fry your own Punahou Carnival malasadas whenever the urge strikes you: be you in Honolulu, Hilo, or Houston.
Don’t want to make them yourself? Then be sure to mark your calendar for Friday, February 5. That’s the first day of Carnival and, coincidentally, it’s when our annual Carnival Malasada Shift will be held. We’re usually working the fourth shift when it’s busy and our labors are sorely needed. It’s hard work but there’s one incredible benefit for those who show up: being offered the opportunity to prepay for a dozen absolutely fresh malasadas to take home with you. If not having to stand in line for thirty to forty-five minutes at the end of Carnival doesn’t appeal to you then what will?
And for those of you whose Carnival favorites were left in the malasada sugar dust, here’s an interesting blog review of Punahou Carnival and its food. Makes your mouth just start to water, doesn’t it?
