Holoku 2011 featured a skit of the Legend of Ka Punahou. Not only was it a nice diversion but it reminded me an Oahuan that once took an entertaining tongue-in-cheek look at this beloved campus spot.

Punahou74's graduation gift was a koi from each classmate. Why? Because Thurston Chapel had been fumigated earlier in the year and all of the pond's koi had been killed. Just after our last chapel, class members ringed Ka Punahou's banks and simultaneously released their fish. Where is yours? I'm still looking for mine.

While uprooting a hala tree may be the way that you remember the story, the class of 1961 had a different take on Ka Punahou:

It is recorded that long ago, when the Gods still roamed the earth, Kane and Kanaloa came to Oahu on a pointed cloud. As the sun went down, they found themselves in a pleasant valley, and rested there. Kanaloa asked Kane for water. Kane smiled, thrust his staff into the ground, and the water gushed forth in abundance. This water of Kane was called the new spring, or Kapunahou. This spring is now the symbol of the school. From its benevolent waters come all manner of delights, providing both sport and relaxation.

Now, that may not be the story you remember (nor I), but I am sure that you ever knew or saw the “manner of delights” that were discovered in the pond’s benevolent waters and in this delightful, and funny, expose.
